The rival Canadian Liberal and Conservative parties now have an equal chance of winning the country’s upcoming federal election, according to BetVictor Canada, with odds of 4/5 (55.6 percent) each.

Newsweek reached out to the Liberal Party of Canada and the Conservative Party of Canada for comment on Thursday via email and online inquiry form, respectively.

Why It Matters

Canada is currently embroiled in a trade war with the United States after President Donald Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on all non-energy trade on March 4. He later paused this on goods covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Trump has also repeatedly said he wants Canada to join the U.S. as its 51st state, which, together with the tariffs, has sparked Canadian fury, leading to the American national anthem being booed and some U.S. goods being removed from the shelves.
