In one of his first moves in office, President Trump said he would change the name back to Mt. McKinley.

ALASKA, USA — Rising high over the Alaskan wilderness, North America’s tallest peak, Mt. Denali, will return to the name of Mt. McKinley in one of the first moves in office for President Donald Trump.

In 2015, the mountain’s name returned to its original historic name, which was rooted in Indigenous heritage.

The name change, ordered by the Obama administration, restored the mountain’s Athabaskan name, which translates to “The High One” or “The Tall One.” For Alaska natives, the mountain has long been a sacred landmark and a symbol of cultural identity, predating its designation as Mount McKinley in 1896.

For decades, Alaskans and Indigenous groups petitioned for the name to be changed back to Denali. Their efforts faced opposition, particularly from Ohio lawmakers who viewed the name Mount McKinley as a tribute to their …
