WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Wilmington City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to oppose the use of tolls as a financing method for costs associated with replacing the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.

The Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization will vote later this month on whether tolls should be an option to fund a replacement bridge. Councilmember Luke Waddell, who is vice-chairman of the WMPO, proposed the resolution, which also challenged the DOT to come up with a more viable funding option for a new bridge.

Waddell’s resolution says the bridge is an “indispensable conduit for regional transportation and economic development throughout the counties of Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender,” and that tolling the replacement for the bridge would “impose a disproportionate financial burden on Wilmington and southeastern North Carolina relative to any other area of the state”.
