Outdoor enthusiasts in Winnipeg have a few more kilometres of ice to skate, cycle and run on.

On Saturday, The Forks announced the next stretch of the Nestaweya River Trail is open. It runs about three kilometres along the Assiniboine River and connects The Forks Port Rink to the Hugo Docks off Wellington Crescent.

The popular skating trail opened on New Year’s Eve and, as of Saturday, it has already surpassed the total number of days it was open the previous winter.

The Forks said its river trail crew will start work on the Red River section next week to extend the trail to the Norwood Bridge.

The Forks asks skaters, cyclists, and runners to stay on the marked trail – and warns it doesn’t test ice quality and thickness on any other areas.

Skating and ice conditions can be found on The Forks website.
