BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Brunswick County Public Utility customers will have to wait even longer to access clean water.
County leaders announced Wednesday in a project progress update that its new reverse osmosis water treatment plant in Northwest will not be completed until late spring.
A reverse osmosis system is one of the most effective systems for removing harmful “forever chemicals” from the water. As of right now, Brunswick County still has levels of the forever chemicals or “PFAS” that are above new standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency for health and safety. Exposure to the forever chemicals has been linked to chronic illnesses.
The water treatment plant, which broke ground in 2020, has had its completion date pushed back several times before. Most recently, county leaders told us in June 2024 that it should be finished by the end of 2024.
