A 71-year-old woman was struck and killed by a passenger train in southwestern Ontario on Tuesday as she tried to cross the tracks, police say.

Windsor police said that shortly after 4 p.m., officers responded to the scene near Lauzon Parkway, between Catherine Street and Lauzon Line, for reports of a pedestrian who had been hit by a train.

“A preliminary investigation determined the woman attempted to cross the train tracks and was hit by an oncoming locomotive,” police said.

She died at the scene.

“The area was closed to traffic for several hours while investigators processed the scene,” officers said.

Anyone with additional information was asked to come forward.
