A 25-year-old woman is facing multiple assault-related charges following what police describe as an unprovoked attack on a woman at the Ajax Public Library.

Durham Regional Police say officers were called to a library at 55 Harwood Ave. around noon on Saturday, where a woman reported being assaulted while studying.

According to investigators, the victim was approached by a woman who began shouting profanities and throwing objects at her. Police allege the suspect attempted to remove the victim’s hijab, poured an unknown liquid on it and tried to set it on fire with a lighter.

The victim screamed for help and library security intervened. Police say the suspect fled the scene but was located and arrested several hours later.
