A southbound vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes to pass a slower car and collided head-on with the Missouri vehicle.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Kansas — Three people from Chesterfield, Missouri, were among eight killed in a wrong-way crash Sunday in Kansas.

According to a crash report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, the deadly crash happened at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday along U.S. Route 169 in Franklin County, Kansas. A GMC Yukon XL was going south on Route 169 when it crossed into the northbound lanes to pass a slower vehicle. The GMC and a northbound Subaru Legacy tried to avoid a collision by swerving onto the shoulder, but they ended up striking head-on.

All four occupants of the Subaru died at the scene. They were identified as 76-year-old John Elliot, 33-year-old Madalyn Elliot, and 69-year-old Norleen Elliot, all from Chesterfield, Missouri. The driver, 37-year-old Alexander Ernst, was from Ames, Iowa, according to the highway patrol.
