Travellers returning to Canada from the United States may have to pay more at the border amid the ongoing tariff war.

The Canada Border Services Agency said it is encouraging individuals to “plan ahead for a smooth return home.”

“In response to U.S. tariffs on Canadian-made goods, Canada has imposed a 25 per cent counter tariff on certain U.S. products brought into Canada,” the agency said in a news release.

“The CBSA is collecting the tariffs on behalf of the Government of Canada in the form of a surtax.”

The release was specifically directed to snowbirds, though of course the tariffs apply to all travellers.

It means that individuals may have to pay a surtax on top of any applicable duties and taxes on certain goods purchased and being brought back into Canada from the United States.
