BRUNSWICK — Despite tensions between the U.S. and Canada over tariffs, young athletes visiting Maine to compete in swimming are coming together. We found hundreds of athletes from both countries at the Winter Championships over the weekend where swimmers were making waves and building friendships at the same time.

“Go Lolah, you got this,” shouted spectators and swimmers.

Hundreds of swimmers from YMCAs across the state of Maine gathered to compete against one another and against athletes from Nova Scotia at the USA Winter Championships. This four day event is held every March at Bowdoin College.

“Swimming is a unique sport in that it’s a team sport but it is still very much an individual sport,” explained Amanda Gleason, meet referee for the 2025 Maine Swimming Winter Champs. “You have kids that are often trying to beat their own best time but when they get in the pool and can compete with a swimmer that is equally fast or faster than …
