Canada will not sell arms to Israel after altered NDP motion passes: Liberal MP [Video]

Speaking in Ottawa’s House of Commons on Tuesday, NDP MP Charlie Angus claimed that “numerous military supply deals” are “still in the works” despite the Parliament calling for an end to military aid to Israel the night before.

An NDP motion initially calling on Canada to recognize the “State of Palestine” passed amid widespread acrimony on Monday, after the Liberals drastically altered its wording to see the government simply work towards that aim as part of a two-state solution.

“The European Union (EU) states that Netanyahu is using deliberate starvation of children in Gaza as a weapon of war. Human rights groups have spoken out against the targeting of journalists, civilian hospitals, aid workers and the United Nations (UN) has called out for Canada its complicity in this because we provide the military weapons to Israel,” Angus said.

Liberal MP Robert Oliphant responded by saying that he was “very proud” that the political parties were able to find “a workable solution” and a “position Canadians could be comfortable with.” Oliphant added that “We will continue to advocate for a ceasefire, we will continue to not sell arms — as we have promised — and continue to make sure that we bring hostages back to where they belong in their homes.”

On Monday in Parliament, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly confirmed reports that Canada had not approved any military export permits for goods headed toward Israel since Jan. 8.
