Canada’s inflation fell to 2.9% in January, Freeland says | FULL

During a visit to Victoria, B.C., on Monday, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said that Canada’s inflation rate fell to 2.9 per cent in January — down from 3.4 per cent the month before and the peak of 8.1 per cent.

Freeland added that the country added 41,000 jobs in February, which was double market expectations, and that wage growth has outpaced inflation for the past 12 months.

“All this is progress, but we all know that so many Canadians… are struggling to make ends meet. They’re struggling to juggle their bill,” Freeland said. “They’re struggling to feel confident about their future.”

Freeland said that as a result, federally-supported initiatives such as Hudson House — which are rental homes for people with low and middle incomes — can be a solution to meet Canadians’ needs.

“Our government is working every single day to build more homes faster and to make life more affordable for Canadians and their families,” Freeland added.
