The Melbourne University student union has debated a motion on whether to ban the national flag.
The motion argues that Australia is a “racist country,” and the national flag represents a nation which continues to “impoverish and brutalise Indigenous people and to sentence refugees to torture in detention centres”.
The Melbourne University student union has committed to no longer raising or displaying “symbols of nationalism”.
Sky News host Andrew Bolt was joined by Melbourne University Liberal Club President Patrick Irwin to discuss this issue.
“A meeting of over 40 students … almost none of them turned on their camera, unmuted their microphone and spoke up against this disgraceful motion,” Mr Irwin said.
He said the centre-left students who hold the majority of votes on campus “watered down” the motion.
