Fears for Victoria’s Treaty progress if next election produces Coalition government

A leading First Nations campaigner has expressed fear the work towards a historic treaty could be undone if Victoria’s 2026 election sees a change in state government, reports Victoria Political reporter Simon Love.

Gunditjmara Woman and VACCHO CEO Aunty Dr Jill Gallagher delivered a rallying speech to a Geelong gathering where she also called for land tax exemptions for Indigenous Australians.

Ms Gallagher proclaimed the political scene in Victoria as currently “in a critical stage” ahead of the next election as elders at the meeting voiced concerns over progress towards a Treaty if the Coalition were to reach government.

“Who knows what is going to happen? Everything that we have worked for, that you have worked for, could be undone,” Ms Gallagher told the gathering.

The Victorian Opposition and its Aboriginal Affairs spokesperson Peter Walsh have been contacted for a response to the claims made by Ms Gallagher.
