Global National: April 5, 2024 | Israel blames aid worker deaths on “operational failures”

In tonight’s top story: Israel is blaming serious errors and breaches of procedures for the attack that killed seven humanitarian workers, including a dual Canadian-American citizen, in Gaza on Monday. The Israeli military has disciplined at least three officers for their roles in the strikes. But as Jackson Proskow reports, accusations are growing that Israel isn’t doing enough to protect civilians.

The deaths of the seven World Central Kitchen workers have sent a chill through the humanitarian aid community. Many organizations are re-evaluating their plans and work in the region. As Heather Yourex-West reports, the killings are a painful reality check that there is no security for anyone in Gaza.

The FBI, along with local law enforcement officials, is investigating a massive security breach at a money storage facility near Los Angeles. Over the Easter long-weekend, thieves broke into a building owned by GardaWorld – an international security firm. As Joel Senick tells us, the thieves walked out with US$30 million in cash.

Finances are certainly important for Canadians right now, as the federal government prepares to table the latest federal budget later this month. New polling by Ipsos conducted exclusively for Global News offers a peek into what many in the country want those fiscal priorities to be. Mackenzie Gray reports.

Canada’s foreign interference commission has wrapped up a week of hearings, where new evidence about attempts by foreign powers to interfere in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections were heard. That evidence focused mostly on China and its apparent efforts to tilt the 2021 election towards the Liberal party. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been reluctant to answer questions about this new information. David Akin has been following the proceedings all week.

Plus, there are just three more sleeps until the much-anticipated solar eclipse. While Canadians are primed for the event, animals are unaware of what will happen. It’s unknown how they will respond to the sudden daytime darkness, which is why a zoo in Quebec is closing its doors on Monday. Mike Armstrong visited the zoo, where research has already started.
