PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The solar eclipse is happening on Monday, April 8. Millions of people will be eager to look at the sky as the moon passes between the earth and sun. But, for many Native American cultures the eclipse is more than a spectacle.

There are hundreds of tribal nations with their own languages, cultures and belief systems here in the Valley. Some tribes celebrate the eclipse while others observe a time of reverence.

“The belief is that during this time the sun is dying, and that it is reborn through an intimate process between the sun and the moon. It is really about respecting the cycle of life and the sun and its journey,” said Elicia M. Goodsoldier from the Phoenix Indian Center.
