BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – The Brunswick County Board of Education is one step closer to finalizing a new sex education curriculum.
Chairman of the Board Steven Barger said the board was receiving a lot of negative feedback about the current sex education curriculum. Specifically, he says the feedback pointed out that it didn’t emphasize the concept of abstinence.
“It was glossed over for sure and we wanted to make sure there was more emphasis put on that as well as all the other important topics,” Barger said. “We just made it a level playing field for all of the topics because all of the topics are extremely important.”
North Carolina currently requires instructors to teach “that abstinence from sexual activity outside of marriage is the expected standard for all school-age children.”
