Questions raised over Labor’s new jobs program for Indigenous Australians

Sky News host James Morrow has discussed the Albanese government’s new Remote Jobs and Economic Development Program.

The Albanese government last week announced its new Remote Jobs and Economic Development Program in its bid to help ‘close the gap’ in employment outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

The government revealed it will inject $707 million to create 3,000 jobs over three years for Indigenous people in remote areas.

Sky News host James Morrow called the new program “bizarre”.

“It’s pretty bizarre because … they’re going to spend $707 million to create 3,000 jobs that more than $200,000 a job and we don’t know what these jobs are for,” Mr Morrow said.

“Are these salaries going to be paid for by the government? Are they on the pay role? Are they adding any productivity to the economy? Are they doing anything to really properly integrate people in remote communities into the border Australian community?

“Which of course is what has to happen if there’s going to be real opportunity and not just shoveling money at people.”
