ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The calendar may say February, but the icy parking lots, slushy roads, and warm conditions scream spring!
The Anchorage Bowl woke up this morning with temperatures pushing 50 degrees in some spots, with the airport already seeing the thermometer climb to 43 degrees. This ties the previous record of 43 set back in 1977 for Alaska’s largest city.
Warmth is stretching across much of the state, with temperatures along the slope nearly 35 degrees warmer than yesterday morning. The main culprit is a rather pronounced area of high pressure over Canada and Southeast Alaska, that is funneling in warmer and moisture-rich air. Wind conditions out of the East-Southeast have also allowed many areas to warm well above freezing across Southcentral. Even areas through the Copper River Basin are seeing temperatures well above average, with highs likely topping out in the mid to upper 30s later today.
