Sexual misconduct will be removed from Canada’s military justice system jurisdiction [Video]

Defence Minister Bill Blair introduced new legislation on Thursday that would remove the Canadian military justice system’s jurisdiction to investigate sexual misconduct.

The nine proposed amendments address key recommendations made in independent and external reviews conducted by former Supreme Court Justices Louise Arbour and Morris J. Fish.

“We understand the need and the responsibility of the CAF to provide support to all of their members who are experiencing this, in the pursuit of justice, we believe that the legislation we have introduced today opens up new opportunities for the victims to pursue justice, and it provides clarity and certainty on how to proceed,” Blair said.

As part of key recommendations made by Arbour and Fish in reports examining sexual misconduct in the CAF, changes include modifying the process for the appointment of three key military justice authorities and expanding the eligibility criteria for military judges.

Arbour’s scathing report followed 18 months of exclusive reporting by Global News exposing the military sexual misconduct crisis.
