Significant snowfall expected Friday in Hamilton, Halton Region

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning Friday for the Hamilton and Halton areas.

The weather agency said nearly 15 cm of snow could fall with the possibility of 2 cm of accumulation per hour. At times visibility could be reduced to zero.

The snow will taper off from west to east late tonight, and Environment Canada is encouraging drivers to be careful.

David Philips an Environment Canada senior climatologist explains the area could see an enhanced snowfall due to the winds blowing from the East off Lake Ontario. With added moisture from the lake creating more snow that will plow into the western end of Lake Ontario.

However, Peter Sniuolis the Roadway Maintenance Manager for the City of Hamilton, says they have been preparing for Friday’s snow all week.

Despite some of the snow falling on Friday night and into the weekend, the City of Hamilton says it won’t have an impact on staffing and road clearing.

The City of Burlington has declared a snow event to start at 9 p.m. on Friday, and on-street parking has been suspended to make way for snow plows.
