Surge in refugee claimants putting pressure on Canadian airports

A surge in refugee claimants is putting pressure on some of Canada’s busiest airports.

The federal government has cracked down on asylum seekers entering the country by land, prompting many migrants to search for new pathways into the country.

The issue has become especially pronounced in Quebec. Since the closure of Roxham Road—the unofficial border crossing between New York and Quebec – the number of asylum seekers showing up at Quebec airports has ballooned.

Around 30,000 people made refugee claims at Montreal’s Trudeau airport in 2023, compared to 3,300 the previous year.
Touria Izri reports.
