SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – On Friday at Whittier Middle School, 8th Grade girls completed a significant project.
The students are a part of Native American Connections teacher Dr. Ann Robertson’s OSO class, and they sewed traditional Native American ribbon skirts.
“They are all so happy seeing their product and stuff and this year we also started doing ribbon shirts for the boys as well and I love seeing their products,” said 10th grader Khrista Heikila.
Ribbon skirts are made and worn by all tribal nations as a symbol of solidarity in being Indigenous.
Each color of the ribbons, which are typically sewn horizontally across the skirt, represents a special meaning or person to the wearer.
