A man charged with assault after shoving the provincial housing minister last summer had his charges stayed in provincial court in Charlottetown on Monday.

Mark Anthony Brown, 62, of Charlottetown, was charged following an altercation at a public meeting in Charlottetown in July 2023.

Video taken by a CBC News journalist showed Brown shoving P.E.I. Housing Minister Rob Lantz at the meeting.

Lantz could be seen staggering backward from the force of the push, liquid spilling from the cup he was holding, but he was not injured.

The meeting was about adding a supervised injection site to the Park Street Emergency Shelter in Charlottetown.

Brown, who is Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown’s brother, had asked that the assault charge be dealt with by alternative measures, meaning outside of the usual criminal court process.
